One Year MBA Programs : Pros and Cons
One year MBA programs are getting a lot of press right now–and boy, the name sure sounds attractive, doesn’t it? Having your MBA in only a year?
Well, yes, that does sound good. And while a one year MBA program might jumpstart your career, there are a lot of pros and cons to be considered–very carefully–before deciding to pursue one.
So, what should you know about one year programs for an MBA?
For one thing, the one year bit can be somewhat misleading. A one year MBA program might actually be anything from 11 to 18 months. And that’s not 11-18 months of typical MBA study, either. These courses are highly intensive, accelerated, and not designed for the person who has any obligation other than studying to earn his or her MBA. One year MBA programs aren’t a ’shorter’ version of traditional MBA study; they’re a condensed version. That is, you’re going to do the whole MBA program, you’ll just be working a lot harder and finish a lot sooner.
If you’re in a place in your career where you are willing and able to take a year off without losing ground–and while still being able to support yourself–then one year MBA programs may be an ideal choice. You’ll immerse yourself in study, and you’ll get through your MBA that much faster and hit the ground running when you’re done.
One more consideration
Before you apply to any one year MBA programs, check, double-check, and triple check that they’re not only accredited, but well-received. Some employers take a dim view of one year programs for MBAs in general, but there are some fantastic program options out there that even the most traditionally minded employers would be glad to see on a resume. Research your options thoroughly.
